About Rika Singh:

Thank you for visiting and taking an interest in my photography. I live and work in Durban, South Africa as a web and graphics designer and have always wanted to take up photography. In 2009 I enrolled in courses and began putting my lecturers teachings into practise. It has been an amazing journey and one of great excitement for me. Like design, you never stop learning when you are behind that camera. I truly love what I do and I hope it reflects in the pictures you'll see on my website and blog. The Beauty In Junk

Monday, March 8th, 2010

It’s funny but until yesterday I never saw the beauty in junk. I had an assignment and the brief asked us to make order out of chaos. We had to photograph 10 to 20 pictures in a scrapyard and print the two best compositions, then submit them. So yesterday I called my Dad and he said he would take me to a scrapyard and asked me to come down to his workshop. I always forget what a pack rag my dad is for scrap and other metal things. I got there and his workshop was filled with stuff from top to bottom, in every corner and its amazing because I was looking at chaos and then he said to me, “Why don’t you take a few shots here?”. I agreed instantly, this place was fabulous! It was a mini scrapyard in his workshop and I was seeing hundreds of photos everywhere I looked! I was in heaven.

Two hours later I was back home and I could feel it in my bones… My assignment was done. Looking at the pictures on the computer a while later and it was confirmed. The funny thing is that I’ve always made fun of my Dad’s workshop for the very same reason I love it now. LOL. I didn’t get two pictures that I spotted when I was walking out and it’s still bugging me so maybe I will have to get him to let me back in one of these days.

I also walked around our house and found a few things to photograph. If it’s in his workshop, he must have a bit somewhere in his garden!

Perfect Moon

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

For about 3 months now, I’ve been looking at the sky and feeling gloomy about it. The sky in Durban was boring and nothing exciting was happening. No beautiful clouds, no gorgeous moon. It could be that I was in the wrong places at the wrong times but there was nothing to inspire me to pull out the camera and shoot. Then about 2 weeks ago, the most beautiful clouds appeared. They looked like little puffs of marshmellow hanging in the sky. The sunsets were amazingly gorgeous but the moon was not full. Why was this important? Well, its why I got interested in photography. One day after work I was driving home (it was a bit late) and as I rounded a curve I saw the moon, as big as I’ve ever seen it, and shining over the ocean. It was a picture perfect moment and I was dying to photograph it. I’d always wanted to take up photography, but this moonlit night was perfect and really inspired me to get going. I have a sweet spot for moonlit nights. They truly inspire me and make me want to click away!

This week, I got some shots when the full moon came out to play. I need a 300mm (at least!) to catch more detail in the shots of the moon specifically. Lenses, or glass as they are referred to by photographers, are almost as expensive as the camera bodies if not more, so some saving is in order before I can take detailed moon shots. But hopefully you will enjoy these ones below, taken with my 50-200mm zoom lenses.

Natures Beauty

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I’ve always loved the outdoors. Flowers, beautiful sunsets, forests, etc. It grew when I took up photography and my eyes are always open looking at the landscape, flowers, the beauty of nature around us. Here are some random shots I have taken in the past few months…
