About Rika Singh:

Thank you for visiting and taking an interest in my photography. I live and work in Durban, South Africa as a web and graphics designer and have always wanted to take up photography. In 2009 I enrolled in courses and began putting my lecturers teachings into practise. It has been an amazing journey and one of great excitement for me. Like design, you never stop learning when you are behind that camera. I truly love what I do and I hope it reflects in the pictures you'll see on my website and blog. I Heart Dog’s…

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Dog’s are beautiful, wonderful creatures. If you scold them, they forget about it almost instantly and become your best friend again. If you chase them away, they will always come back trying to get a pat on the head or just about any other body part because that’s the thing about dogs… They are not fussy about affection. There are dogs around the world who have saved peoples lives and others that are trained to be faithful and BE someone’s eyes.

If you’re having a bad day, they will keep you company. They can’t talk, but they pick up on your moods and offer comfort by just sitting close to you. Lot’s of people don’t like dog’s and I understand that but I am not one of them. It’s true that when I am getting ready for work and can’t have dog hair on me, I try not to touch them. But when I get home, I try to make it up to our two little (big) guys and they are always there waiting to be loved too.

About seven weeks ago my aunts dog suprised her by giving birth to three little puppies. One of them didn’t survive but the other two grew day by day and about two or three weeks ago we visited her to see these puppies.

Yesterday, my aunt discovered that at some point in the day the puppies mother had died in the garage. She seemed fine and gave no signs of being sick but something happened. Today we visited them again and it was sad to not see her there. The puppies have their dad though, and his brother. They are doing great and don’t look like they did two weeks ago. They are huge now and so much cuter. I didn’t take my camera along though. So I didn’t get any photo’s of them today. I need to go back with my camera, because they sure don’t look like this anymore!

If you have a dog, don’t forget to show it some affection today. Sometimes they leave us without warning and its really sad to think that we might not get a chance to show these extremely loveable animals just how much we care tomorrow.

Photographing Birthdays…

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Recently, my cousin Ayush had a birthday so I took my camera to the party and snapped a few shots. If you are a photographer reading this, I learnt a lot from the experience. I had to bump the ISO up by the evening too which created some noise but it wasn’t too bad. I will definitely remember to take my tripod next time. It’s one of the things my lecturer mentioned that I still remember but ignore until I am in a situation that reminds me that, yes, she was right and I should have brought my tripod along! Kids don’t stay still for a second and its really hard to catch them when all they want to do it run around and eat cake so another thing is you have to be quick! This little guy didn’t even wait for us to give him the go ahead to blow out the candles! LOL. Cute.

I got a few portraits of the birthday boy that I hope his mum will be pleased with. They would make great prints on a wall as he was just himself in front of the camera.

The birthday cake was delicious and in the spirit of 2010. A soccer field complete with running men.

His twin brother and sister turn 21 in about a month and a half and I’ve offered to take some portraits for them. Stay tuned to the blog to see more.
