About Rika Singh:

Thank you for visiting and taking an interest in my photography. I live and work in Durban, South Africa as a web and graphics designer and have always wanted to take up photography. In 2009 I enrolled in courses and began putting my lecturers teachings into practise. It has been an amazing journey and one of great excitement for me. Like design, you never stop learning when you are behind that camera. I truly love what I do and I hope it reflects in the pictures you'll see on my website and blog. If you are looking for a specific category of my work, please use the menu button "Categories" above to navigate to categories such as Weddings, Children Photography, Pregnancy, etc. Please contact me via email at rika@rikasingh.co.za or call me on 083 792 8081 if you would like to book a shoot or just to discuss working with me. Ray-Ray loves the camera!

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

On Sunday we had a wedding to attend and a memorial. We got to the memorial later in the day after the wedding and look who greeted us at the gate:

Ray-Ray as he is known with affection to his family, is about 4 years old and always greets us at the gate in this manner when we visit him. Its the cutest sight and instead of running away from the camera like most kids do, he let me shoot away and even looked straight at the camera. And he was still while doing it too! I was amazed. He is so cute. Here are a few more I got of him on that day.

After eating a biscuit and messing the couch. Love all the crumbs:

This next one was shot really quickly. I turned my back for a second and when I looked around again, this is what I saw. I didn’t want to lose the moment because of his expression and the way my gran was telling him not to run out of the gate. Hence my aunts half body in the background. :)  Very distracting but the rest of the picture has so much character, I had to share:

He lives in Joburg. Hope we get to see him soon again.

Weekend Wedding

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

This past weekend we attended a wedding. It was interesting to see the photographer work from the sidelines.

We took some family pictures after the wedding. I am in some of them as you will see and my uncle, Rajesh, took those shots. My family:

I don’t believe in taking my camera into a wedding venue if the couple have a photographer already because I think its rude and you could get in the way of the other tog. I do carry my camera around for family shots after the wedding though as you saw above. At this wedding the bride and groom were waiting around for the photographer to come outside and take a few shoots and since they were standing there and I wasn’t in the other togs way I snapped a couple photos.

And then he showed up and we went back to shooting pictures of ourselves. ;)

Photographing Birthdays…

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Recently, my cousin Ayush had a birthday so I took my camera to the party and snapped a few shots. If you are a photographer reading this, I learnt a lot from the experience. I had to bump the ISO up by the evening too which created some noise but it wasn’t too bad. I will definitely remember to take my tripod next time. It’s one of the things my lecturer mentioned that I still remember but ignore until I am in a situation that reminds me that, yes, she was right and I should have brought my tripod along! Kids don’t stay still for a second and its really hard to catch them when all they want to do it run around and eat cake so another thing is you have to be quick! This little guy didn’t even wait for us to give him the go ahead to blow out the candles! LOL. Cute.

I got a few portraits of the birthday boy that I hope his mum will be pleased with. They would make great prints on a wall as he was just himself in front of the camera.

The birthday cake was delicious and in the spirit of 2010. A soccer field complete with running men.

His twin brother and sister turn 21 in about a month and a half and I’ve offered to take some portraits for them. Stay tuned to the blog to see more.
